Sophomores Produce Day 1 Wins At SMC Fall Invitational

MORAGA, Calif. - The Gonzaga University women's tennis team opened play at the Saint Mary's College Fall Invitational Friday. The Zags were led by sophomores Britta Stime and Gabrielle Verspieren who advanced to the ITA Blue Doubles semifinals with a 8-2 opening-round win over San Jose State University's Cynthia Vo and Valerie Comier.
Stime also produced a win in singles play, defeating the University of San Francisco's Xingyao Li 7-5, 6-0 in the round of 16 in the ITA Blue Singles bracket.
Redshirt sophomore Prue Teitzel and junior Kristina Zauere both rebounded from early round losses with wins in the consolation brackets. Teitzel defeated Santa Clara University's Maggie McGeorge 2-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-5) in the opening round of the ITA Red Singles consolation while in the ITA White Singles Zauere took a 7-5, 6-0 win over Jessy Mekpoh of the Dons.
"We struggled today in our first rounds," Bulldogs head coach D.J. Gurule said. "We played against some tough opponents but we really hurt ourselves with unforced errors. We did bounce back and played better in our second matches."
The tournament continues Saturday before wrapping up Sunday.
