LAKEWOOD, Wash. - Gonzaga University's women's golf team failed to gain ground on the leaders on day two Tuesday of the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational at Tacoma Country and Golf Club.
Playing without No. 1 player Victoria Fallgren who is not competing because of a virus, the Bulldogs were unable to better Monday's opening-round 307 as Gonzaga shot a 315, the second highest score of the fall season. That left the Bulldogs in 11th place at 622 heading into Wednesday's final round of the 54-hole event. The Bulldogs trail San Jose State University by five strokes to move into the top 10.
The University of California, ranked 11th in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin rankings, remained atop the leaderboard with a 567, seven strokes ahead of second-ranked University of Southern California, with unranked host University of Washington 13 shots behind the Trojans in third.
Individually the Bulldogs weren't able to get untracked. Freshman Tai Jade 'TJ' Kliebphipat, who shot an even-par 72 over the 6,078-yard layout Monday, shot 78 Tuesday and fell from a tie for seventh into a tie for 21st with a 36-hole total of 150. Jessica Howe had a 77 Tuesday as the only other Bulldog to shoot a sub-80 round Tuesday and is at 157. Rachel Sibbitt, who shot 75 Monday, shot 80 Tuesday and is at 155.
""It wasn't our day today," Gonzaga head coach Brad Rickel said. "The putts didn't drop and we let it get to us. Jessica came back from a bad front nine. We'll need our best round tomorrow to have a good finish."
The Bulldogs had just four birdies in the round, and no player had more than one, and the team also had five double bogeys Tuesday.
Emily Childs of Cal, playing in the No. 5 spot for the Bears, has a pair of 68s for a 36-hole total of 136 for a 4-stroke lead over teammate Joanne Lee.
