CHENEY, Wash. - Sophomore Gabrielle Verspieren claimed the Singles B title as the Gonzaga University women's tennis team concluded the final day at the GU/EWU Fall Invitational held at Eastern Washington University Sunday.
"I am very pleased with our results and effort at this weekend's tournament," Bulldogs head coach D.J. Gurule said. "Gabrielle had a great run. She was really focused the entire weekend."
Despite being down 2-5 in the first set, Verspieren fought back and won 11 of the next 12 games to win the match over Seattle University's Gabriella Weissman 7-5, 6-1 and claim the title.
In the doubles finals, senior Rika Mehndiratta and redshirt sophomore Prue Teitzel fell just short, losing 9-7 to the University of Idaho's Molly Knox and Yvette Ly. Despite the loss, Gurule was happy with their performance together.
"I think they have gelled nicely and are starting to trust each other more," Gurule said.
The matchup between Teitzel and junior Kristina Zauere for the Singles A title did not take place due to rain.
The Bulldogs picked up several wins in the back draws. Mehndiratta and sophomore Britta Stime each picked up a win in the Singles A group while junior Sophie Lantta, sophomore Taurie Bjerken, redshirt sophomore Madeline Parker and freshman Kelly Humphrey also earned a win in the B group.
In doubles, three Bulldog teams earned a win over the Eagles. Verspieren and her partner senior Danielle Farmer defeated Kelsey Knight and Chelsea Patton 8-1, Lantta and senior Jackie Tabb defeated Alix Silha and Rocio Norena 8-5 while Parker and Stime topped Nefeli Diamanti and Judy Liening 8-6. Humphrey and Bjerken defeated Seattle's Steffanie Mortera and Mikaela Peterson 8-7 (5).
The Bulldogs resume their fall schedule at the Saint Mary's College Invitational in Moraga, Calif., Oct. 8-10.
