Men's Rowing Hosts Fawley Cup Saturday

SPOKANE, Wash. - The Gonzaga University men's rowing team will host Washington State University in the Fawley Cup Saturday morning at Silver Lake in Medical Lake, Wash. The regatta, which is the Bulldogs final regatta before the championship season begins, will start at 9 a.m. with the Freshman 8+ race. The final race of the day, the Second Varsity 4+, is scheduled to begin at 11:15 a.m. The Fawley Cup Varsity 8+ matchup is set for 9:15 a.m.
"It will be great to finally race on our home course at Silver Lake," stated head coach Dan Gehn, whose team has had to race its other home meets at different venues due to the unruly weather. "We have a good rivalry with Washington State and look forward to a competitive day of racing.
"This race also serves as an important tune-up for the WIRA Championships in two weeks. With the new format, the top three finishers in the Varsity 8+ qualify for the National Championship, while the top finisher in the Junior Varsity 8+ and Freshman 8+ earn an automatic bid."
Gonzaga has won 18 out of the last 19 Fawley Cup's. The Fawley Cup is awarded to the annual winner of the Varsity 8+ race. The Bulldogs, who had to overcome hitting a buoy at the 500-meter mark, defeated the Cougars by nearly eight seconds a season ago. GU finished the sloppy and soupy course with a time of 6:00.59, while WSU crossed the finish line in a time of 6:08.90.

Take Interstate 90 West to Exit #272 (WA 902) Medical Lake Exit
Turn right onto WA-902 (West Medical Lake Road)
Follow Medical Lake Road 5.25 miles
Turn Left onto North Stanley Road (Conoco Station at corner)
Follow North Stanley Road for half a mile
Turn right onto East Lake Road
Follow East Lake Road for one block
Turn left onto North Hallett Road
Follow North Hallett Road 2.25 miles Road ends at Silver Lake Camp
Parking for this event: The Bible Camp has a sizable group on the Silver Lake grounds. Parking will be tight. Please don't park on the road in front of the camp. Spectators are encouraged to park in the RV parking area directly across from the camp on the west side of the road or in any of the gravel areas.
