SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga University heads to San Diego, Calif. for the West Coast Conference Championships this weekend. The eighth-seeded Bulldogs will face top-seeded Pepperdine University in Friday's first round at 8:00 a.m.
The Zags (11-11, 1-5 WCC) enter the weekend winners of their last two matches. Gonzaga picked up its conference win against Portland earlier this season, beating the Pilots 4-3 on Mar. 27.
"This has been a really fun group to watch play this season," said head coach D.J. Gurule. "They have competed in every match and done everything we have asked. Everybody has continued to get better; the whole group has made huge strides this season."
Kristina Zauere leads a trio of Bulldogs that posted double figures in wins this season, recording wins in her final five matches to head into the weekend with a team-best 17 victories. Rika Mehndiratta finished with 11 wins and Clare Dodge posted 10 victories for the Bulldogs. Aglaya Kokurina also added nine wins while playing at No. one singles all season. Gonzaga has been strong in doubles play all season long, led by the pairings of Kokurina and Zauere, and Mehndiratta and Danielle Farmer who each posted 10 wins in the regular season.
"Closing out the regular season with two wins is a good confidence boost for us heading into a tough matchup against a solid Pepperdine team," Gurule said. "We are excited about this weekend. A number of players are playing well right now and we will be looking to create some problems for other teams this weekend."
