PALM SPRINGS, Calif. - The Gonzaga University women's tennis team had its four-match win streak snapped after dropping a 4-3 decision the University of Toledo in Palm Springs, Calif. Friday.
Gonzaga (7-4) looked as though they were on their way to posting their fifth consecutive win after sweeping the three doubles matches. Toledo rallied back to make it a 3-3 match heading into the day's final match, the number six singles match. Gonzaga's Madeline Parker was ahead 3-1 in the third and final set but suffered a knee injury and was forced to retire, giving Toledo the final point of the match.
The Bulldogs had senior Aglaya Kokurina and freshman Kristina Zauere each post singles victories. It was Zauere's team-leading 10th win of the season.
"It was a tough way to end a good trip today," said head coach D.J. Gurule. "The team fought hard in a very competitive match against a good Toledo team today. We were one match away; Madeline was playing very well in the third set and was on her way to winning the match before she had to retire. Overall we played very well today, just came up one match short."
The Zags will head to Seattle, Wash. for matchups against Michigan State University Saturday and Seattle University Sunday.
