PALO ALTO, Calif. - The Gonzaga University women's tennis team opened play at the ITA Northwest Championships in Palo Alto, Calif. Friday.
The young Bulldog squad was led by the sophomore Rika Mehndiratta who won the first set but dropped a well played first round match to Megan Sporndli of the University of Portland 0-6, 6-4, 6-3. Fellow sophomore Danielle Farmer also lost her first round match-up 6-0, 6-1 to Sabine Gunnarsson of Saint Mary's College. Freshman Sophie Lantta later fell in her first round match against Veronica Li of Stanford University 6-0, 6-0.
The Farmer and Mehndiratta pairing played well together later in the afternoon Doubles action but could not get by a solid Caroline Stevens and Florance De Vrye pairing from the University of Nevada in the first round, falling 8-4.
Consolation matches for all three Bulldogs are slated for Saturday.
