Zags Compete at Henley Regatta

ST. CATHERINES, Ontario - Four Gonzaga University men's rowers competed at the 125th Royal Canadian Henley Regatta August 7-12. Juniors Brian Franceschi, Greg Malman, Brendan McCarthy and Pat Swihart all rowed with Penn Athletic Club (PENN AC) at the event held on the Martindale Pond in St. Catherines, Ontario.
In the Senior B men's eight, the PENN AC RA, which both McCarthy and Swihart were members of, captured Henley Gold. PENN AC RA won the race in a time of 5:43.21, nearly two seconds ahead of second-place finisher Vesper BC (5:55.23).
PENN AC RA earned a spot in the Senior B men's eight final by winning its heat race with a time of 6:05.12.
McCarthy, Swihart, Malman and Franceschi all rowed in the Senior men's eight. McCarthy and Swihart rowed together with the 2nd senior PENN AC RA boat, while Malman and Franceschi rowed together with the 3rd senior PENN AC RA boat.
Neither boat qualified for the finals as the 2nd senior PENN AC RA boat placed fourth in heat one with a finish of 5:50.04 and the 3rd senior PENN AC RA boat placed fourth in heat two in a time of 5:53.36. To qualify for the finals you had to finish in the top three.
Also racing at the event was 2005 Gonzaga graduate Nathan Wilson. Wilson, who rowed for the Bulldogs from 2002-05, helped the 1st senior PENN AC RA capture Henley Gold in the Senior men's eight. PENN AC RA took first place with a time of 5:47.81.
