Men's Rowing Completes First Day Of IRA's

CAMDEN, N.J. - The Gonzaga University men's rowing Varsity 4+ finished the first day of the Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) National Championships with a fifth place finish during Thursday's time trial on the Cooper River in Camden, N.J. With their finish, the Bulldog Varsity 4+ earned a spot in the top semifinals and are in good position for another top finish. Gonzaga also entered a Varsity 4- that finished fourth in its heat race and will now compete in the third repechage on Friday.
The Varsity 4+ closed out its time trial in 5:34.81. Temple University had the fastest time of the day, finishing the course in 5:30.08. Brown University (5:31.61), the University of Puget Sound (5:32.55), MIT (5:33.55) and the Zags rounded out the top five. The top 12 crews from the Varsity 4+ time trial advance to the A and B semifinals on Friday and have the opportunity to qualify for the Grand Final and a chance at a national championship.
Rounding out the top 12 were the University of Massachusetts (5:35.41), the University of California (5:35.68), UCLA (5:35.77), Colgate University (5:36.52), Hobart College (5:36.72), Boston University (5:36.76), and Oregon State University (5:36.76).
The Gonzaga Varsity 4- placed fourth in its heat in a time of 6:33.80. Colgate earned the heat victory finishing the course with a time of 6:22.76. Cornell University came in second four seconds later at 6:26.17, while Yale University took third in a time of 6:32.82. Closing out the heat was MIT (6:33.85) and Boston (6:37.77).
The Bulldogs will have another chance at advancing to the top semifinal on Friday when they race in the Varsity 4- third repechage. Gonzaga will race against Lehigh University, Grand Valley State University, the University of Wisconsin and Brown at 10:00 a.m. ET.
