Men's Rowing Captures Gold In Second Varsity 8+

RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. - The Gonzaga University men's rowing team captured a first place finish and two second place finishes at the WIRA Championship on Sunday at Lake Natoma just outside Sacramento, Calif. The Bulldogs earned gold in the Second Varsity 8+ and captured silver in both the Varsity 8+ and Novice 4+.
The Varsity 8+ was such a close race that it came down to a photo finish between three different boats. After reviewing the video UC Davis was named the winner by only six inches over Gonzaga. The Aggies crossed the finish line in 6:03.8, while the Bulldogs earned silver with a time of 6:04.3. Placing third and earning a bronze medal was UC San Diego with a finish of 6:05.7.
The second place finish was the highest finish for the Zag Varsity 8+ in five years. In 2003 Gonzaga also took second behind UC Davis.
The Varsity 8+ boat consisted of LeeAnne Templeman, Warren North, Scott McCoy, Pat Swihart, David Hinshaw, Brendan McCarthy, Matt Wernette, Bryan Franceschi, and Andre' Gallant.
Earning the lone victory for Gonzaga on Sunday was the Second Varsity 8+. The Bulldogs and UC San Diego battled throughout for the victory. With the Zags leading with 250 meters to go, the Tritons took the lead. Gonzaga did not wilt though and overtook UC San Diego in the end and earned a one-second victory. GU crossed the finish line in 6:18.1, while UCSD finished in 6:19.1.
The Second Varsity 8+ boat was comprised of Amanda Brown, Greg Malman, Sean Haase, Derek Clemmensen, KC Anderson, Ryan Roller, Alex Moore, Drew Smith, and Pat Moran.
The Novice 4+ had a strong race and placed second in a time of 6:56.2. Orange Coast College earned the open water victory in a time of 6:51.2. Rounding out the top three was UC San Diego who crossed the finish line in 7:02.3.
In the Novice 4+ boat was Sean Finerty, JP Roach, Mike Marsh, Scott Lampe, and Kelly Cumiskey.
