Bulldogs Have Strong Showing at WIRA Championships

RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. - The Gonzaga University men's rowing program had a strong showing on the first day of the 2007 WIRA Championships at Lake Natoma just outside of Sacramento, Calif. The Bulldogs advanced two boats to Sunday's Grand Finals, while one boat placed fourth in the Petite Final.
Gonzaga's Varsity 8+ boat dominated in its heat racing, winning it in margin of six seconds. The Bulldogs closed out the race with a time of 6:05.1, while second place Sacramento State finished in a time of 6:11.1 to also earn a spot in the Grand Final. Rounding out the heat was the University of Puget Sound (3rd, 6:13.7), UC Santa Barbara (4th, 6:16.0) and Loyola Marymount University (5th, 6;16.7).
UC San Diego won the second heat of the Varsity 8+ race in 6:00.5; the fastest time of the day. Placing second was UC Irvine with a time of 6:12.7. In the third heat race UC Davis earned the victory in a time of 6:05.6, while the University of San Diego took second with a time of 6:11.4.
Also earning a spot in the Grand Final was the Bulldog Novice 4+ boat. Gonzaga closed out its heat placing second with a time of 6:55.5, four seconds off Orange Coast College who won the heat in 6:51.7. Rounding out the heat was San Diego State who placed third in 7:22.0, UC Irvine who took fifth in 7:50.6 and the University of Oregon who finished sixth in 8:00.8.
The Zag Varsity 4+ boat closed out their championship on Saturday with a fourth place finish in the Petite Final. The Bulldogs began the day finishing fourth in their heat with a time of 7:11.2 to earn a spot in the Petite Final. Finishing in the top three of Gonzaga's heat race was Long Beach State University (1st, 6:53.1), Puget Sound (2nd, 6:55.2) and Orange Coast College (3rd, 7:04.1). In the Petite Final, Orange Coast won the race with a time of 7:06.1, followed by Santa Clara University in second with a time of 7:09.9. Placing third was San Diego State University with a time of 7:13.2, just edging out Gonzaga, who placed fourth in a time of 7:13.4.
