Men's Rowing Recaptures Fawley Cup

MEDICAL LAKE, Wash. - Gonzaga University men's rowing recaptured the Fawley Cup after defeating Washington State University Saturday at the 2,000 meter Silver Lake course in Medical Lake, Wash. The Bulldogs had their string of 16-straight Fawley Cup victories broken last season but now have won the 17 out of the last 18.
The Zag varsity eight defeated the Cougars to pick up the Fawley Cup victory. Gonzaga jumped out to an early lead and never looked back as the Bulldogs finished in a time of 6:18.94; a 28 second win over Washington State who crossed the finish line in 6:46.62. The Zag junior varsity eight also finished ahead of the Cougars, placing second in a time of 6:32.20.
"It was a great race today," said head coach Dan Gehn. "I thought the varsity eight rowed exceptionally well and I am happy to have the Fawley Cup back in our hands. We look forward to seeing WSU again next weekend at the WIRA Championships."
Gonzaga also earned a victory in the junior varsity four race. The Bulldogs rowed in a time of 7:46.2 to defeat the Cougars junior varsity four with a time of 8:03.82.
The novice eight race was a tight race throughout between the Washington State A squad and Gonzaga. The Cougars earned their lone victory of the race edging out the Bulldogs with a time of 6:40.72. Gonzaga crossed the finish line only a second later in 6:41.90. The Washington State B team place third in the novice eight race with a time of 7:32.00.
Gonzaga will be back in action next Saturday and Sunday when it participates in the WIRA Championships on Lake Natoma in Sacramento, Calif.
