Zags Capture Fawley Cup Title

MEDICAL LAKE, Wash. - The Gonzaga University women's rowing program made history Saturday by winning only its second-ever Fawley Cup against Washington State University at Silver Lake in Medical Lake, Wash. GU won five out of the seven races on the day, including a two-seat victory in the Varsity 8+ race. The Bulldogs Varsity 8+ defeated the Cougars in a time of 6:31.94; their fastest finish in school history. WSU, who were rated No. 8 in the latest preseason rowing poll, finished in a time of 6:32.90.

The Novice 8+ race, which began the day, saw Gonzaga earn the 2,000-meter victory in a time of 6:46.76; nearly 24 seconds ahead of the Cougars. Washington State was timed at 7:09.46

The Bulldogs also won the 3^rd Varsity 8+ and both the Varsity 4+ and Novice 4+. Gonzaga finished the 3^rd Varsity 8+ in a time of 7:05.47, while winning the Varsity 4+ in a time of 7:38.37 and the Novice 4+ with a time of 7:49.10.

The Cougars lone victories of the day were the Junior Varsity 8+ and the 2^nd/3^rd Novice 8+ with times of 6:44.77 in the Junior Varsity 8+ and a 7:29.20 in the 2^nd/3^rd Varsity 8+.

This is the 16^th year of the Fawley Cup as it started in 1991. Gonzaga's only other victory came 10 years ago in 1997.

The Bulldogs will return to action next Saturday when they participate in the Northwest Collegiate Rowing Conference Invitation in Vancouver, Wash.
