Men's Crew Advances To Cal Cup Petite Final

SAN DIEGO - The Gonzaga University men's varsity crew advanced to Sunday's Cal Cup Petite Final after a third place showing in Saturday morning heat racing at the San Diego Crew Classic on Mission Bay. The Bulldogs were just two seconds off the pace from making the Grand Final, an event they placed third in last season and won in 2003. The Petite Final will start at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday.
The University of Southern California won the Bulldogs heat race posting a time of 6:08.30 on the 2,000 meter course. Gonzaga and UC San Diego battled for second and third behind the Trojans boat with the UCSD pulling ahead in the final 500 meters for a two-second margin. UCSD was in at 6:10.15 with Gonzaga trailing at 6:12.15. Rollins College finished fourth to advance to the Petite Final.
Orange Coast College and the University of Colorado won the other two heat races to earn spots in the Grand Final. Also making the Petite Final field were the University of Texas, University of Notre Dame, Washington State University and UC Santa Barbara. Gonzaga won the Petite Final championship in 2004.
