Becker Does Well In Day Two of Cougar Classic

PULLMAN, Wash. - Gonzaga University sophomore Amanda Becker of the women's tennis team advanced to the finals in the backdraw of the No. 1 singles on Saturday afternoon in the second day of the 2005 Cougar Classic hosted by Washington State University.
Becker got to the finals by way of defeating Eastern Washington University's Kacey Knox in the first round of the backdraw in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. Becker then continued her hot streak with a hard fought battle with the University of Portland's Christine Feyen in the second round. Becker took the first set 6-3, but Feyen found herself back on even terms with Becker after taking the second set 6-2. Becker stood her ground and in the third and final set she took out Feyen with a 6-3 win.
In other No. 1 singles play GU had Erin Humphrey, Emily Anderson and Kendall Bates all in action. Humphrey was defeated in the first round by Feyen, 6-2, 6-4 and also took a defeat in the second round to Knox, 6-4, 4-6, 7-5. Bates was defeated in the first round by WSU's Aleksandra Stefanova, 3-0 ret. Anderson dropped both of her matches by default first to the University of Idaho's Kareen Konishi and in round two she defaulted to teammate Bates.
In No. 2 singles action Allie Hause defeated teammate Carrie Schofield by default, and newcomer Courtney Lau was defeated by Portland's Katie Kennel in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2.
No. 3 singles action saw Gonzaga's Erica Moldenhauer get defeated by Idaho's Kasie King in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0. Moldenhauer then received a bye in the second round of the backdraw. GU's final singles competitor, Katie Colton, was defeated in the first round of the backdraw by Montana State University's Laura Richert, 6-2, 2-6, 6-2.
In No. 1 doubles play, GU's team of Becker and Bates received a first round bye before falling to MSU's Lozano and Luetolf, 8-4 in the second round. GU's final No. 1 doubles tandem of Humphrey and Lau picked up a win in the first round of the backdraw defeating EWU's Davornicka and Knox, 8-5 before falling to Idaho's team of Ruman and Konishi, 8-5.
No. 2 doubles play saw the tandem of Hause and Moldenhauer get defeated by WSU's Stefanova and Hollyn Taub 8-2. A joint team of GU's Colton and Boise State University's Carolyn Berry were defeated by Portland's Leoni and Soltysik, 8-3. This same joint team also handed GU's Moldenhauer and Hause a loss in the first round of the backdraw, 8-3. GU's final No. 2 doubles team of Becker and Schofield did not play their scheduled matches due to an injury.
The Bulldogs will conclude play in their opening fall tournament on Sunday afternoon in Pullman, Wash.
