CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. - Three Gonzaga University women's golfers and one men's golfer have been honored for their academic prowess.
Libby Campbell, a senior for the Bulldogs this past season, and Sarah Sheffield and Sarah Clarke, a pair of freshmen, have been named to the All-American Scholar Golf Team as selected by the National Golf Coaches Association of America. Matt Munroe, a senior for the men's team last season, has been named a Cleveland Golf All-American Scholar by the golf coaches.
Sheffield had a 3.82 grade point average, Clarke a 3.58 and Campbell a 3.61. Munroe graduated with a 3.32 GPA.
The criteria for selection to the All-American Scholar Team are some of the most stringent of all college athletics. The minimum cumulative GPA is 3.50 and student-athletes must have competed in at least 50 percent of the college's regularly scheduled competitive rounds during the year.
To be eligible for Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar status an individual must be a junior or senior academically and competed in at least two full years at the collegiate level, participate in 70-percent of his teams competitive rounds, have a stroke average under 76.0 in Division I and maintain a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.2. A recipient must also be of high moral character and be in good standing at his college or university.
"These honors speak highly of the student-athletes that represent not only the golf program but Gonzaga athletics in general," head golf coach Robert Gray said. "Gonzaga has long emphasized the total student-athlete in the classroom and on the competitive field, and we strive for that same combination in our golf program. I think these honors reflect that philosophy."
