Men's Crew Set For IRA Petite Finals

CAMDEN, NJ - Gonzaga University men's rowing will have two boats rowing in Saturday's Petite Final at the 2005 Intercollegiate Rowing Association National Championships at Cooper River in Camden, NJ. Gonzaga's varsity 4+ and freshmen 4+ both finished fifth in Friday's semifinals to advance to the Petite Final. Gonzaga's varsity 4+ also advanced to last year's Petite Final, finishing third in the event to finish 9th overall at the championships.
Stanford University captured the first semifinal as the Cardinal blew away the six-team field with a time of 7:05.69. Gonzaga was in a four-team pack that had second through fifth place separated by only six-seconds. Rutgers University and Army crossed second and third to advance to the Grand Final while Long Beach State edged Gonzaga by two seconds for fourth. Rutgers was in at 7:11.64 followed by Army at 7:13.17. Long Beach State pulled a time of 7:15.71 followed by Gonzaga at 7:17.78. The University of Minnesota was last at 7:22.8. Long Beach State, Gonzaga and Minnesota will be joined by Harvard University, Temple University and the University of Wisconsin in the Petite Final. Hobart College won the other semifinal heat.
The Bulldogs freshmen 4+ also pulled a time of 7:17.7 to finish in fifth place, eight-seconds behind third-place finisher Yale University. Temple won the heat race at 7:05.73 followed by Stanford at 7:08.37 and Yale at 7:09.14. Brown University was fourth at 7:10.88 and will join Gonzaga and sixth-place Navy (7:28.91) in the Petite Final. Cornell University, Colgate University and Hobart College will also compete in the Petite Final. Harvard won the second semifinal heat.
