Men's Crew Captures Fawley Cup

MEDICAL LAKE, Wash. - Gonzaga University won its 16th consecutive Fawley Cup as the Bulldogs men's crew swept all four races against Washington State University on Wednesday afternoon at the 2,000 meter Silver Lake course. Both teams fought course conditions that included a constant 8 mph headwind with gusts up to 13 mph at some points during each race. A moderate chop was also present for all four events.
Gonzaga won the varsity men's 8+ race for the 16th straight year to pick up the Fawley Cup against the Cougars. GU pulled out to an early lead and was hit by a strong gust with 1,000 meters remaining which allowed WSU to make cut into Gonzaga's lead. The Bulldogs were able to finish out a strong piece winning with a time of 6:39.26 with Washingotn State a second behind at 6:40.47.
The Bulldogs junior varsity 8+ held off a charging Washington State crew as Gonzaga rowed a time of 6:44.78 to win by nearly 3-seconds with WSU coming in at 6:47.02. Gonzaga's top novice boat won the first novice 8+ race by seven seconds with GU in at 6:45.36 and WSU crossing at 6:52.45. Gonzaga closed out the day with a 15-second win in the second novice 8+ race. Gonzaga won with a time of 7:01.03 followed by WSU at 7:16.69.
Gonzaga will return to action on April 29 as they look to defend their West Coast Conference championship before competing in the WIRA championships on April 30 and May 1. Both races take place at Lake Natoma in Sacramento, Calif.
