Men's Varsity Crew Advances To Cal Cup Grand Final

SAN DIEGO - The Gonzaga University men's varsity crew will look to capture its second Cal Cup Grand Final Championship in the last three years after the Bulldogs advanced to the Sunday afternoon championship with a heat race victory on Saturday morning. Gonzaga posted a time of 6:19.4 to win the opening race of the 2005 San Diego Crew Classic at Mission Bay. Gonzaga was one second faster than the University of Colorado which finished second in the first morning heat at 6:20.83. Orange Coast College was third followed by UC San Diego, UC Irvine, University of Notre Dame and San Diego State University.
The University of Minnesota rowed to victory in the second morning heat with a time of 6:18.6 with the University of Southern California also advancing out of the second heat with a time of 6:22.71. Trinity College of Connecticut won the final heat with the fastest time of the day at 6:13 followed by the University of California lightweight crew at 6:19.36. Gonzaga won the Cal Cup Grand Final in 2003 and won the Petite Final last season. Race time is set for 1:40 p.m. at Mission Bay.
