MEDICAL LAKE, Wash. - The Gonzaga University men's varsity crew started the season on the right note picking up a 2.5 victory over Orange Coast College on Friday morning at Silver Lake. Racing with a slight tail wind, Gonzaga's varsity 8+ trailed at the 1,000 meter mark before making a late move and pulling past OCC at the 500m mark. Gonzaga finished with a time of 6:01.5 with OCC finishing at 6:04.
In the second race of the day Orange Coast College's novice 8+ held off a late Gonzaga charge to win by two-seconds over the Bulldogs novice crew. OCC crossed the line at 6:06.7 followed by Gonzaga at 6:08.7. OCC also raced a junior varsity 8+ in the event which finished at 6:17.
Gonzaga will return to the water on Saturday morning hosting OCC, the University of British Columbia and Washington State University with racing starting at 8:30 a.m. at Silver Lake.
The Bulldogs crews consisted of coxswain Lauren Gadeken, stroke Connor Barry, Patrick Haffey, Matthew Wernette, Nathan Wilson, Ben Foley, Derek Clemmensen, Joe Dudley and bow David Hinshaw in the Varsity 8+. Coxswain Dana Skoog, stroke Scott McCoy, Warren North, Ben Rosenblatt, Michael Smoot, Justin Bayley, Brett Boissevain, Drew Smith and bow Drew Hastings raced in the Novice 8+.
