Zags Do Well in Second Day at GU/EWU Tournament

CHENEY, Wash. - The Gonzaga University women's tennis team continued play at the Gonzaga/Eastern Washington University Tournament with Amanda Becker advancing to the semifinals round of the singles maindraw and Katie Colton advancing to the semifinals round of singles backdraw.

Becker advanced to the quarterfinals by breezing past the University of Montana's Martyna Nowak in straight sets 6-2, 6-3. Becker then found herself in a battle with Montana's Alexandra Ulesanu in the second round of play. Becker took the first set 6-3, but Ulesanu was able to get back on even terms with Becker taking the second set 6-4. Becker then dug in and took the third set 6-2 to advance into the semifinal round of the singles maindraw.

Gonzaga's other two players in the singles maindraw suffered losses. Erin Humphrey was defeated by the University of Idaho's Kareen Konishi in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, and Carrie Schofield was defeated by UM's Ulesanu, 6-3, 6-1.

In the singles backdraw the Bulldogs had Katie Colton register a win over teammate Allie Hause, 6-3, 6-2 and advance on to the semifinal round of the singles backdraw. Courtney Lau was defeated by Eastern Washington's Marie Carroll, 7-5, 6-4 and Erica Moldenhauer was defeated by EWU's Jenney Anderson, 6-2, 7-5.

In doubles play, Gonzaga had two tandems in action with both picking up losses. Humphrey and Lau were defeated by Idaho's Lauren Schrub and Kasie King, 8-6. Moldenhauer and Becker were downed by Montana's Elizabeth Walker and Mari Castello, 8-5.

The Bulldogs will conclude play at the Gonzaga/Eastern Washington Tournament on Saturday in Cheney, Wash.
