Zags Open Play at EWU/GU Tournament

CHENEY, Wash. - The Gonzaga University women's tennis team opened play at the Eastern Washington University/Gonzaga Tournament Thursday evening. Gonzaga, Eastern Washington, the University of Montana and the University of Idaho all competed in the event.

The Bulldogs picked up a pair of wins in singles play as redshirt freshman Carrie Schofield picked up her first win of the season and sophomore Erin Humphrey also registered a win. Schofield's win didn't come easily as she was in a heated battle with Montana's Malena Rosen. Schofield grabbed the early advantage taking the first set 6-4, but found herself back on even ground with Rosen after dropping he second set 6-4. The two then engaged in a third and final set to determine the winner with Schofield coming out victorious winning the set 10-6. Humphrey picked up her first round win by defeating Jenney Anderson of Eastern Washington 7-6 (2), 6-1.

GU's final four competitors didn't fair as well in singles play with all of them suffering first round losses. Freshman Courtney Lau was defeated by Elizabeth Walker of Montana, 6-0, 6-1 and classmate Katie Colton suffered a 6-0, 6-0 defeat to Amanda Manhovits of EWU. Junior Allie Hause was defeated in straight sets 6-0, 6-2 by Montana's Jonna Schwartz and Erica Moldenhauer was the final GU singles competitor and fell to EWU's Rachel Berger, 6-1, 6-0.

The Bulldogs recorded a split in doubles action with the tandem of Amanda Becker and Moldenhauer downing Montana's team of Schwartz and Rosen, 8-5. Gonzaga's team of Colton and Hause fell to Idaho's Patricia Ruman and Mariel Tinnirello, 8-1.

The Bulldogs will be back in action on Friday as they continue play at the Eastern Washington/Gonzaga Tournament in Cheney Wash.
