PORTLAND, Ore. - Gonzaga University's men's soccer team is still looking for its first goal of 2004 after dropping a 1-0 decision to the University of Alabama-Birmingham on Saturday in the first match of the Nike Invitational hosted by the University of Portland.
After getting blanked 3-0 on Wednesday at home by the University of Washington, the Bulldogs peppered 24 shots at UAB keeper A.J. Robles - most of them from inside the box - but he was more than up to the task. He made 12 saves as UAB won its season opener and Gonzaga fell to 0-2.
Seniors Arni Pjetursson and Mike Herzog were dominant on offense, Pjetursson launching nine shots and Herzog four, but none could find their way past the junior keeper Robles.
The lone goal of the day came from Jerson Monteiro, who beat Gonzaga keeper Sean Sosnovec to the top right corner from 16 yards at the 79:24 mark. The Blazers got just three of their nine shots in the match on goal as Sosnovec had just two saves.
The Bulldogs will return to action Monday to play Sacramento State University at noon as the Nike Invitational draws to a close.
The host Pilots and Sac State were scheduled to meet in Saturday's second match, with the Pilots facing UAB in Monday's 2:30 p.m. finale.
