Men's Crew Heads To IRA Championships

SPOKANE, Wash. - The Gonzaga University men's crew program will close out the 2003-04 Gonzaga athletic year this week as they send two boats to compete in the IRA National Championships in Camden, New Jersey. The Bulldogs will enter boats in the varsity four and freshmen four competition set for the 2,000 Cooper River race course. This will be the first appearance at the IRA's for Gonzaga since the 2001 season when the Bulldogs freshmen four finished eighth in the nation. Gonzaga has competed the last two years in the ECAC National Invitational and by-passed the IRA competition. Racing begins on Thursday morning with heat racing; final heat selection will not take place until Wednesday afternoon.
The Gonzaga varsity four will consist of coxswain Mara Oblak, a senior from Seattle; stroke Mark Voorhees, a senior from Bow, Wash.; Pat Haffey, a junior from Spokane; Connor Barry a sophomore from Walla Walla, Wash,'; and bow Nathan Wilson, a junior from Post Falls, Ida. The Zags freshmen four boat will include coxswain Lauren Gadeken from Sammamish, Wash., stroke Max Malotky from Redding, Calif., Derek Clemmensen from Carson City, Nev., Matthew Wernette from Lodi, Calif., and bow David Hinshaw from Soldotna, Alaska.
