Six Gonzaga Crews Advance To WIRA Grand Finals

RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. - Gonzaga University men's and women's crew had a banner day during the opening day of racing at the 2004 Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships at Lake Natoma just outside of Sacramento, Calif. All six boats entered in WIRA events advanced to Sunday's Grand Final's with the women placing first in all four events and the men placing second in their two heat races.
Gonzaga entered boats in the men's and women's varisty eight, men's and women's junior varsity eight, women's varsity four and women's novice four.
The Gonzaga varsity women's boat captured their heat race with a time of 6:56.8 to hold off UC Davis and advance to Sunday's Grand Final. Western Washington finished third followed by UC Irvine, Pacific Lutheran and Saint Mary's College. The women's junior varsity eight also won their heat race along with the Bulldogs claiming victory in the women's varsity four and women's novice four.
On the men's side Gonzaga finished second in both the varsity and junior varsity races. The second place finishes in both heat races moved Gonzaga into Sunday's Grand Final. The Gonzaga men's varsity posted the second best time of the day as they raced UC San Diego down the course. UCSD rowed a time of 6:11.6 with Gonzaga rowing a 6:12.7. Orange Coast College and UC Davis won the other two varsity eight heat races. In the junior varsity race Gonzaga finished second with a time of 6:21.6, three seconds behind OCC at 6:18.2. UC Davis won the other JV eight race at 6:18.7.
The women's varsity crew includes coxswain Courtney Serpa, stroke Maria Bokulich, Carolyn Schepper, Kari Durgan, Jessica Kocarnik, Kristi Aamodt, Karen O'Hagan, Nicole Aadland-Lewis and bow Heather Jewell. The junior varsity eight is comprised of coxswain Melissa Hayes, stroke Mariah Smith-Miloff, Bridget Troy, Joni Goodman, Jess Nestor, Teresa Archuleta, Maria Fussell, Jenni Cooper and bow Sarah Allison. Gonzaga's varsity four boat is coxed by Erin Palmiter with stroke Brianna Morin, Hilda Morones, Brittany Price and box Alison Cushman. Gonzaga's novice four includes coxswain Melissa Refuerzo, stroke Jessica Michaels, Courtney Cline, Liz Sambach and box Ann Parker.
Gonzaga's varsity eight will include coxswain Elaine Parry, stroke Mark Voorhees, Pat Haffey, Max Malotky, Nathan Wilson, Matthew Wernette, Ben Foley, Connor Barry and bow David Hinshaw. Gonzaga's junior varsity eight includes coxswain Mara Oblak, stroke Nick Talbot, Billy Votava, Mike Wall, Derek Clemmensen, James Toshack, Mike Demmert, Matt White and bow Brad Jones.
