Men's Crew Wins WCC Race

RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. - The Gonzaga University men's crew won both races on Friday morning at the third running of the West Coast Conference championships at Lake Natoma. The un-official title was the also the third straight for the Bulldogs in the event that pits all five schools from the WCC that sponsor men's crew. Gonzaga's men's varsity eight won the five team varsity race with a time of 6:08.20 while the junior varsity eight defeated Santa Clara University in a head-to-head race. Both Gonzaga boats will next race in the WIRA Championships on Saturday and Sunday.
The Bulldogs varsity eight comprised of coxswain Elaine Parry, stroke Mark Voorhees, Pat Haffey, Max Malotky, Nathan Wilson, Matthew Wernette, Ben Foley, Connor Barry and bow David Hinshaw covered the course at 6:08.20 rowing at a steady pace over the 2,000 meter course. Santa Clara finished second with a time of 6:13.42 followed by Saint Mary's College at 6:18.55, Loyola Marymount University at 6:22.50 and University of San Diego at 6:28.49. The Bulldogs will now turn their sites on the WIRA Championships in which they are seeded fourth overall.
In the junior varsity race, Gonzaga jumped out to an early lead and never looked back as the Bulldogs covered the course in 6:23.98 to post a commanding 18-second win over Santa Clara. The Gonzaga JV boat included coxswain Mara Oblak, stroke Nick Talbot, Billy Votava, Mike Wall, Derek Clemmensen, James Toshack, Mike Demmert, Matt White and bow Brad Jones. Gonzaga's JV boat will now compete in the WIRA Championships where they are seeded third overall.
