Men's Crew Looks To Extend Fawley Cup Streak

SPOKANE, Wash. - The Gonzaga University men's varsity crew will look to extend its Fawley Cup winning streak to 15 straight years on Saturday afternoon when the Bulldogs face Washington State University at Wawawai Landing in Pullman. Gonzaga and WSU have not met in a head-to-head race this spring but both schools were in the Petite Final of this year's San Diego Crew Classic with Gonzaga winning the race and Washington State finishing sixth. This will be the Bulldogs final tune-up for next week's West Coast Conference and Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships in Sacramento, Calif.
Gonzaga's varsity eight line-up will consist of coxswain Elaine Parry, stroke Mark Voorhees, Pat Haffey, Max Malotky, Nathan Wilson, Matthew Wernette, Ben Foley, Connor Barry and bow David Hinshaw. The Bulldogs junior varsity eight will include coxswain Mara Oblak, stroke Nick Talbot, Billy Votava, Mike Wall, Derek Clemmensen, James Toshack, Mike Demmert, Matt White and box Geoff Hills. Gonzaga's freshmen eight are coxswain Lauren Gadeken, stroke Max Malotky, David Hinshaw, Matthew Wernette, Derek Clemmensen, James Toshack, Mike Demmert, Matt White and box Geoff Hills.
Racing at Wawawai Landing on the 2,000 meter Snake River course will start at 1 p.m. The men's races will start at 1:15 p.m. with the varsity eight race for the Fawley Cup. Racing will then continue at 2:15 p.m. with the junior varsity eight and at 3:15 p.m. with the freshman eight. The racing schedule is spaced out to allow for some rowers to double in additional boats and to work with the Washington State women's home races against the University of Tennessee and Oregon State University.
Directions to Wawawai Landing: From Highway 195 (north or south), turn west on Wawawai Road...travel on Wawawai Road for 10 miles...the road will end at a stop sign, turn right and drive down into the canyon six miles...at the bottom of the canyon, go past the county park on the right and over the railroad tracks...the boathouse is a cinderblock building on right...park on the side of the road or in the parking lot south of the boathouse.
