Gonzaga Men In WIRA Grand Final

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Gonzaga University's men's varsity eight won its heat Saturday to advance to Sunday's Grand Final at the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) championship.

The Bulldogs covered the 2,000-meter Lake Natoma course in 6:01.1 to beat the University of San Diego (6:10.12), Santa Clara University (6:13.3), UC Irvine (6:14.0) and Saint Mary's College (6:16.0).

Gonzaga's boat consists of coxswain Elaine Parry, Mark Voorhees, Pat Haffey, Connor Barry, Nathan Wilson, Ben Foley, Jeff Kiely, Brad Hughes and Mike Baisch.

Gonzaga's junior varsity eight will race in Sunday's final at 10:50 a.m. with the men's varsity eight Grand Final at noon. There were no JV eight heats on Saturday.

Gonzaga's varsity eight finished third in last year's Grand Final while the JV eight captured the title.
