SPOKANE, Wash. - The Gonzaga University Bulldogs swept the Eastern Washington Eagles 7-0 Monday at the Martin Courts. Gonzaga improved to 5-15 this year as the regular season draws to an end. Monday's matches mark the only home appearance by the Bulldogs this spring.
GU earned the doubles point as No. 1 duo of Jamie Buterbaugh and Sirrah Williams defeated Jennifer Jolley and Marie Carrol 8-1 while Kendall Bates and Katie Rock downed Leanna Mehren and Teri Sherrill 8-5 in the second spot.
Seniors Taio Miller and Aaryn Volkmann completed the doubles sweep as they played their last home match, defeating Stacie Pate and Lesley Liddell 8-1 in the third match.
In singles action Buterbaugh defeated Jolley 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 while Bates downed Carrol 6-1, 6-3 to win at No. 2.
Senior Bulldog, Volkmann, kept the Bulldogs rolling as she downed Pate 6-0, 1-0 in the No. 3 spot before Pate retired. Rock defeated Liddell 6-3, 6-0 at four while Williams picked up the 6-0, 6-4 win against Mehren in the fifth match. Leigh Orne capped the Bulldogs run with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Sherrill at No. 6.
Gonzaga begins West Coast Conference Tournament action Friday at Pepperdine, the WCC tournment ends Sunday. A total of four matches will be played daily at 9 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. The winners' bracket matches will be played in the afternoon.
