Former Gonzaga Rower Wins U.S. Speedskating Championship

SPOKANE, Wash. - Former Gonzaga University women's rower Kristine Holzer has excelled in another athletic avenue as the 1996 Gonzaga graduate recently won two United States Championships in speedskating at the U.S. Long Track Speedskating Championships. The championships were held at the Utah Olympic Oval in Kearns, Utah, on Dec. 27-31, 2002.
Holzer won the ladies's 5000-meters with a time of 7 minutes 18.93 seconds on the final day of competition after previously winning the 3000-meters with a time of 4 minutes 12.31 seconds. With her victories at the U.S. Championships Holzer now advances to the United States North American/Oceania Regional Qualifier on Jan. 25-26. The Regional Qualifier, which takes place at the Utah Olympic Oval, serves as the qualifier for the World Allrounds Speedskating Championships in Gothenburg, Sweden, Feb. 8-9, 2003.
Holzer, a native of Boise, Idaho, was a member of the Gonzaga women's crew team earning All-West Coast Conference and All-Pacific 10 Conference honors in 1997. She was also named the Gonzaga Senior Athlete of the Year in 1997.
